In Defense of Sunday School

Psalm 119:105: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
Sunday School is a service dedicated to biblical teaching. Along with the Lord's Supper service, it is a primary service of the church. It was originated in the 19th century by the British journalist Robert Raikes. In Brazil, it is widely used by the Assemblies of God, Baptist churches, Presbyterian churches, and other denominations. However, many leaders have removed it from their churches—a move that is extremely dangerous from both spiritual and apologetic standpoints. Here are some reasons to have Sunday School in your church, or at least some form of weekly Bible study:
1 - Combating cults: Cult members are trained to deceive and persuade Christians. Christians lacking biblical knowledge are easy targets to be led down the path of perdition. Your church will lose members without Sunday School.
2 - Spiritual weakness: Christians who do not study the Bible fail to find the encouragement needed to evangelize, pray, and cope with trials.
3 - Combating heresies: Without Sunday School, the church tends to become a breeding ground for foolishness and heresy. No one is able to discern truth from falsehood anymore.
4 - Preparing workers: For a church to have good workers, they must be trained in Sunday School. It is there that excellent deacons, evangelists, pastors, teachers, and others are raised up.
5 - Cultural preparation: Many Christians lose their faith in school, college, or the workplace due to the lack of a solid Sunday School program. Bible study provides the foundation to prevent this.
If you are a pastor, make sure to implement Bible study in your church. You will see that your members become less of a burden to you. If you are a member, fight to ensure that your Church, do not forget this area. May God bless your life, ministry, and family.
