Discipleship Against Heresies

Discipleship Against Heresies

Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32

Discipleship is the act of teaching a Christian for months or even years so that they may develop a character more like Christ. It differs from school or academic teaching (although these are also very important) because it is not only theoretical but also practical and life-oriented, rather than focused on the job market. This practical aspect occurs through the discipler's interaction with the disciple through church services, church outings, evangelistic days, and events such as conferences.

Discipleship is what Jesus did with the twelve apostles for about three years. He taught them theory and practice, traveling with them throughout Judea. They witnessed him preaching, teaching, performing miracles, casting out demons, helping women, conversing with friends, and debating with the Pharisees. As a result, the twelve apostles were recognized as excellent Christian leaders, preaching the gospel and helping many people.

The problem with many Christians is that they have never received discipleship or have been discipled by leaders who have the mindset of Prosperity Theology (a mindset that says all that matters is being rich), even if not all formally follow Prosperity Theology. Thus, for example, these Christians do not recognize when they are wrong, dislike Bible study, despise women, despise the poor, like sects and heresies, lie, deceive people, do everything for money, etc. Many don't even realize they are like this because of spiritual blindness.

Not all pastors follow the mindset of Prosperity Theology, and therefore, not all Christians are like that. I myself have discipled young people who are now church workers and pastors. They know the importance of money, but they don't forget about spirituality and family. I also have pastor friends who are content with their church salary (stipend) or look for part-time work to supplement their income.

Discipleship is very important. Although it doesn't make anyone perfect, it helps a person to be closer to Christ. I can't disciple anyone online; discipleship, because of its practical component, needs to be in person, but it's possible to combat heresies and explain the main themes of the Christian faith. You can easily find the theoretical part here on the blog. That alone already improves your attitudes a little and protects you from sects. May God bless your life and ministry.
