Depression at Christmas and New Year
''These things I have spoken to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.'' John 16:33
Many people are doing well at this time of year. They have had a year with many blessings and victories. If this is your case, thank God for that. However, there are other people for whom things did not work out so well. Projects failed and dreams were frustrated.
If this is your case, perhaps now at Christmas and at the end of the year you are feeling sad and discouraged. Some even become depressed. I advise you not to despair. There is no adverse circumstance that God cannot reverse. It is necessary now that you pray to God and reflect on what you need to change so that next year will be better.
An important point is that you begin your change with your spiritual life. Give your life to Christ. And how do you give your life to Christ? This surrender begins with small attitudes. How many books of the Bible have you read? Start by choosing a book of the Bible that you like and read it all. I prefer to read the Bible sequentially (starting with the New Testament or Old Testament), which follows the order of the books of the Bible.
This type of reading is more effective for learning, but if you can't, you can read the books that you like the most. Generally, people really like the Gospels and Psalms and Proverbs. A second important point is that you exercise your calling. If God has called you to preach, preach. If He has called you to praise, praise. If He has called you to anything else, exercise that calling. Ask God for guidance to better exercise your calling.
Finally, change your perspective on life. If you are sad because a bad year is ending, think that a completely new year is coming. New things will arise for you, new opportunities and new challenges. Once again, you will be able to achieve certain results if you walk in God's direction.
